The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Director: Rob Cohen

Starring: Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh

Release: 2008-07-29

Another sequel, another disappointment. Don't get us wrong, we loooooved The Mummy and its sequel, The Mummy Returns. Even the spin-off, The Scorpion King, had its merits. But The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor takes the franchise to a new low.

This time, adventurer Brendan Fraser, his wife (Maria Bello, standing in for Rachel Weisz), his son (Luke Ford) and his brother-in-law (the always amusing John Hannah) travel to the Far East, where Luke accidentally reawakens the Dragon Emperor (the terrific Jet Li) who plans to take over the world with his army of the undead...

Boring and overly-CGIed for its own good, the new Mummy movie lacks the charm and wit of the earlier pictures. Although the plot is essentially similar to the rest of the franchise, the script here is really dull. The action sequences also lack the goofy thrills and spills of the earlier movies.

Perhaps, this was the reason why Rachel Weisz did not want to reprise her role in the once-successful franchise. Rachel's replacement, Maria Bello (Coyote Ugly), unfortunately doesn't have any chemistry with Brendan Frasier, and neither has chemistry with their supposed son, Luke Ford, who looks too old to be playing the role.

On the other hand, Jet Li is very good as the villainous Emperor Han, and it's a pity we did not get to see more of him in the movie.
