Blindness

Director: Fernando Meirelles

Starring: Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Gael Garcia Bernal, Alice Braga

Release: 2008-10-21

The best film of the week is the apocalyptic drama Blindness. Based on a terrific novel by Nobel winner Jose Saramago, the story begins when a man driving through the city suddenly goes blind. His doctor, Mark Ruffalo, cannot tell what's wrong with him. But the next morning, the doctor too loses his eyesight.

The mysterious disease spreads quickly through the city. Strangely enough, the
doctor's wife (Julianne Moore) remains unaffected. But when her husband has to be quarantined, she pretends to be blind too so she can go with him and stay by his side.

In the hospital where the blind are clustered together, chaos soon takes over...

Directed by Fernando Meirelles, who helmed The Constant Gardener and City of God, Blindness is a very good film that examines the dark depths of the human heart. Some of its scenes are simply unforgettable while the cast is truly solid.

Indeed, it is a real pleasure to see Julianne Moore (Savage Grace, The Hours, Far From Heaven), Mark Ruffalo (XX/XY) , Gael Garca Bernal (Bad Education, Babel), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) and Alice Braga (City of God) all stretching themselves as actors, thanks to the challenging material.

For intelligent, discerning audiences, this is the movie to catch.
