Is Anne Hathaway the new queen of Hollywood? Her limpid Bambi eyes, coltish limbs, sophisticated sense of style and acting skills may explain why she's getting more work these days than any other young actress. And with her latest film Rachel Getting Married, she delivers a career-best performance that will only garner her more respect in Hollywood and more devotion from audiences.
Directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), Anne plays a recovering drug addict who leaves her rehab center to go straight to her family home, where her sister Rachel (Rosemary DeWitt) is getting married. But her arrival sparks off a series of confrontations with various family members, which unwittingly drags out the past - a past that the family has tried to keep a secret
Anne is terrific in the role - by turns, sad, lonely, hopeful, hopeless, bitchy and insightful. She is the only reason to watch this otherwise boring and indulgent drama that tries too hard to give you an "authentic" experience by using herky-jerky handheld cameras and seemingly improvised dialogue.
The film is somewhat messy. But Anne rises above the flawed material to deliver something quite genuine.
