Amsterdam park posts sign to warn of 'gay cruising'

After receiving complaints from passers-by about sexual activities taking place in a park, district officials decide to warn unsuspecting park users by putting up a sign.

A park in southwest Amsterdam has introduced information signs pointing out areas where gay cruising takes place and men have sex with other men, reported Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

District officials interviewed revealed that the sign was put up in De Oeverlanden park after passers-by complained of sexual activities taking place in the park. The sign also suggests where children can play and people can walk their dogs.

Paulus de Wilt, an Slotervaart District official, was quoting as saying that they had come to the decision with the local chapter of the COC, Holland's main organisation for gays and lesbians, with safety being the main consideration. An increasingly number of cases involving robberies and violence in the park has recently been reported.

The city council of Slotervaart, a district in southwest Amsterdam, decided to post the signs after receiving complaints from passers-by about the sexual activities taking place in the park which has been known for decades as a gay cruising area.

"It's our duty as a city council to warn people about what's happening here."

When asked about the legality of sexual activities in the park, she said that it's up to a judge to decide. "As far as I know, it's not illegal if it doesn't happen in the open." When asked by the reporter if it would not be a problem if it's in the bushes, she quipped, "As far as I'm concerned, that's right."

At the close the Dutch man says"...as long as they don't bother others I think it's fine". That's all Gays at beats want really. A place to meet men and not to be bothered by people who are straight.

now that's where "a walk in the park" becomes "THE walk in the park"...loves it!

That's absolutely fair by that council to do so; I don't get that whole park sex thing (unlike a friend of mine, who lives beside a small park in London and practically Leaps over the fence into it almost every night), but, if guys MUST find unconventional uses for Shrubbery, then it's pretty fair and right to warn other park users...

A decent country is there was one, formidable people with open mind.
How refreshing!
This is what a mildly religious can do. Anybody there ?
Bravo.

A little advertising never does any harm. If they'd install a vending machine for condoms etc., they would probably make some money for park maintainence as well. Hmmm .... maybe even a little cafe.

The Netherlands is an evolved country when it comes to tolerance. I agree with 33longchamp. Add trash bins for used condoms so patrons of fun dun turn the park into a glue factory. Carbon trail people, carbon trail!..;)

very sophisticated of a well-evolved society;
no hang-ups, non-judgemental,
separation of church(es) and state at work...
all they want is just to be fair to all,
minorities or non-minorities included.

considering that the Dutch are the tallest people in the world,
they should start growing taller bushes!
LOL

now, if only our Asian city councils can follow this Dutch model...
that should make a killing for the councils' coffers...hehehe!

TY very much to the Fridae Team for this informative item.
show 'em, Fridae! GO!
;-)

this idea maybe a novel one, but may attract extremist muslim youths to rob and beat gays in the park. since integration policies of the governments have failed to tame these muslim youths that don't share the liberal policies of their host countries they see our gay community as a target and these signs may attract them to conduct violence against gays. no wonder why so many dutch support tougher immigration policies targeting against these people that don't believe in our liberal traditions! power to the netherlands and empower gays against virulent muslim extremists!

To nomdeguerre, it is not right to single out Muslim youths for your laments. Some Muslims are extremists and most are not in the Netherlands. There are bigots amongst Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Aethists and yes, Muslims. The problems are with the homophobes, regardless of their faith.

it is unfortunate that you feel that way. i have used descriptive adjectives such as "extremist" to describe a certain group that is bent to our destruction.

i dont really feel like ppl should have the right to have sex in public. if they want to do it outdoors cuz thats their fetish, let them go into the woods or into their backyard, not a public place created by the community government for all citizens to enjoy. a park is where children play. i really feel it is doing the community a disservice to say "children please go over there... this part of the park is for adults to seek out partners for sex. if you dont want to have sex then you dont belong here." if they want to hook up they should go to a bar.

i totally agree with anothermind.....public places are meant for public....u can always have ur fun time at the comfort of ur own privacy....and not to do it in public....there are children out there and i believe its not right for us to profane such innocent minds....would u like to have ur parents watching u doing it in public? theres a place for everything.....cruising in a public place is ok, but sex in the public areas are a no no for me....

I agree with “anothermind” and “Grrrr”. As for “Bains”, is this really what we would call a well-evolved society and very sophisticated, and “nomdeguerre” with his so called descriptive adjectives, I have to agree with “vesaurus”, homophobes comes in all shapes and sizes, colours and creed. But I have to ask, is there no sense of decorum in humanity anymore? Since when has having sex in public become the done thing? I, for one, do not want to walk in a park, when I know a guy and a gal are making out behind some bush or another. We all have fetishes and certain kinks, but should we not keep them out of the public eye? What’s happened to the old adage, “There’s a time and place for everything”? Pretty soon people will be asking for a place at the office where they can cruise their colleagues and make out. I mean, is it back to the Roman days? I thought we had all had moved beyond that kind of debauchery, at least in public. No doubt some will call me old fashioned, be that as it may, where should the line be drawn then? I’ve always thought sex was a private thing between 2, 4, 5, 10 or 20 people (whatever makes your boat float), but shouldn’t we keep it in the right place? Frankly, whether there are kids in the park or not, is beside the point. What is the point, is that it’s just not the right place to “do it”, is it?

Cruise if you must, but then go off to a more private place. I mean, straight men cruise women every waking moment of their lives. But does that mean when they’re winked back at, they can dart behind the next tree and have a fuck-fest? Public sex seems just so devoid of all decorum and so utterly undignified, isn’t it?

I think the park did something that most people don't do, which is mediate. We don't see that much often and it's absolutely fabulous.
