Uruguay becomes 12th country to legalise same-sex marriage

Lawmakers in Uruguay on Wednesday voted 71-21 to legalise same-sex marriage, making the South American country the 12th in the world and third in the Americas to do so.

Uruguay's move came after its neighbour Argentina approved gay marriage in 2010. Same-sex marriage has been permitted in Mexico City, but not the rest of the country, since 2009.

The Washington Post notes that "whereas some other countries have carved out new territory for gay and lesbian couples without affecting heterosexual marrieds, Uruguay is creating a single set of rules for all people, gay or straight. Instead of the words 'husband and wife' in marriage contracts, it refers to the gender-neutral 'contracting parties.'"

All couples can adopt, or undergo in-vitro fertilisation procedures, and decide which parent's surname comes first when they name their children.

The new law is expected to take effect 90 days after its enactment.

Eleven countries (Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Sweden) and several sub-national jurisdictions (parts of Brazil, Mexico, and the United States), allow same-sex couples to marry.

Thailand is the best choice to start legalizing same sex marriage in Asia as we all know that most of people in Thailand respect the same sex relationship issues I suppose.

If you include France and Ireland, who are in the process of recognising equality, it is noticeable that 9 of the countries involved are Catholic; and this is despite the aggressive homophobia of the last Pope.

Gay Marriage is now legal in New Zealand too. The Bill was passed in our NZ Parliament last night on a conscience vote. 77 votes in favour, 44 against.

Australia.......Unbelievable, so disappointed.
I desperately hope that China became the 1st Asian country of gay marriage legalised。Sometimes the dream can be true.
