For the first time, Japan grants asylum to refugee due to sexuality

Japan is known for its tough inmigration stance and accepts less than 100 refugees each year.

Japan granted an LGBT refugee asylum last year, citing risk in country of origin due to the person’s sexuality. It is the first known case of Japan granting asylum based on sexual orientation and Japan’s Immigration Control Agency said that homosexuality was illegal in the individual’s country, where the refugee had been arrested, imprisoned and released on bail for homosexual acts before seeking asylum in Japan. Japan granted the individual asylum as they were ‘at risk of being persecuted because of being a member of a particular social group’. The agency did not give any more information about the individual’s identity or country of origin.
