The Farrelly brothers made a name for themselves in the 1990s with their super-dumb super-gross comedies like There's Something About Mary and Dumb & Dumber. After laying low for a few years, the boys are back with another tasteless, indecent comedy that will make you shake your head in disbelief or even disgust.
Ben Stiller plays a ageing bachelor who decides to get married to a beautiful girl (Malin Akerman) whom he recently met. Little does he know that she has some seriously annoying habits like farting very loudly and talking very, very dirty in bed. On their honeymoon, Ben meets another girl (Michelle Monhagan) who seems the opposite of his new wife. Quickly, Ben decides to dump his new wife and chase the new girl...
The problem with the Farrellys' brand of toilet humour is that it just doesn't amuse us anymore. Most of the jokes and gags here are dumb and offensive. Most of the characters are total schmucks. And while we know that the Farrellys' films have always capitalized on these traits, this film has too little of the naivete and charm found in the earlier Farrellys' efforts to offset its vulgarities.
Indeed, toilet humour is just so 90s. Just as fashionistas now laugh at the big hair and shoulder pads of the 80s, watching The Heartbreak Kid makes us wonder why we ever enjoyed the Farrellys' films in the first place.
