Opening in the US last week, it smashed the box-office with impressive opening figures of US$46 million. Everyone is calling this The Blair Witch Project-meets-Godzilla for good reason.
Cloverfield is a monster movie shot in a herky-jerky video camera style a la Blair Witch. It begins with a group of young and attractive revelers in Manhattan whose party is interrupted by loud explosions and buildings falling.
As crowds gather in the street to investigate the source of the trouble, they catch sight of gigantic creature with a sweeping tail thundering through their city. Everyone scrambles to get out of the city but not all will survive...
Directed by Matt Reeves and produced by J J Abrams, who were both the brainchild behind the hit teen series Felicity, Cloverfield is a movie for the YouTube generation who are accustomed to the spontaneous and shaky style of filmmaking rendered by mobile phones and videocameras.
It's not a great movie, but it is a lot of fun. Definitely for the young.
