Bali: paradise is green

Some highlights on Indonesia beautiful and friendly destination.

With glorious sunshine, beautiful landscapes, sandy beaches and a friendly gay scene, Bali is one of the top holiday destinations in Asia for LGBT travellers. Some may also appreciate its reputation as a slightly hedonistic tourist getaway where visitors may indulge in a bit of 'naughty' while enjoying what the Island has to offer.

Bali is predominantly a Hindu island, in contrast to Indonesia’s other more predominantly Muslim communities. It is more relaxed and less restrictive when it comes to the LGBT community, but its local traditional customs remain in place and most of the LGBT activities can be found in the more westernised tourist areas. The friendliness and the charm of the Balinese make it a very welcoming destination.

Bali’s gay nightlife is centred around Jalan Dyana Pura in Seminyak on Bali’s south-west coast. A little quieter than the neighbouring Kuta and closer to the restaurant street, there are a number of gay bars for locals and tourists alike.

Balinese food is influenced by the multitude of islands in the archipelago and their rich and varied food culture, so eating out in Bali is always exciting. Choosing from Sate or "staty” in the street, pepes and tum (food cooked in banana leaves), or Nasi Goreng with fresh seafood, all is freshly cooked to order.

If you fancy treating yourself to a cheeky get-away in a luxurious setting, perhaps check out one or more of the following resorts, each with its own unique characteristics:

The Conrad Bali - a beautiful beachfront resort situated in Nua Dua Beach, about 45 minutes from Seminyak. Surrounded by lush gardens and meandering pools, it is a beautiful place to relax;

The Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak - its location makes it perfect for a stay in the very heart of the gay scene. All 287 modern rooms have a balcony with fantastic views to the garden or the pool;

The Intercontinental Bali - situated south of Seminyak in Jimbaran Bay, this astonishing resort will welcome you with its white sandy beach and a touch of traditional Balinese architecture;

The Warwick Ibah Hotel - if what you are looking for is a leap into Bali's tropical paradise for a completely relaxing stay, immersed in nature's greenery, this is your destination. This luxury resort should make you feel 'a touch of heaven on earth' in beautiful Ubud Area.

The Santi Mandala Villa and Spa - A mountain view villa resort set in 3.5 hectares of hillside garden, located on the outer reaches of Ubud and wonderfully positioned facing a spectacular view of Tanaraga Giri Lake, rice terraces, and tropical vegetation.
