French National Assembly approves law allowing same-sex marriage

France's lower house of parliament on Tuesday approved a sweeping bill to legalise same-sex marriage and give the same rights to all married couples to adopt children.

The bill, promoted by President François Hollande and his Socialist Party, which controls the legislature, passed by 329 to 229 in the National Assembly, despite loud opposition from religious leaders and from the center-right and months of mass protests and counter-protests.

Marchers in support of same-sex marriage. Yes Yes Yes, Equality http://www.ouiouioui.org supports the right to same-sex marriage, filiation and medically assisted procreation (procréation médicalement assistée).

The bill will come before the Senate, which is also controlled by the Socialists and their allies, for confirmation. It is expected to pass.

France now joins Britain in in allowing gay marriage and adoption — making them the largest European countries to do so. The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Spain, as well as Argentina, Canada and South Africa have authorised same-sex marriage, along with nine U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

Once again, the process is not over...

It has to go through the Senate (should be more or less straightforward, there is a slight left-wing majority)

Possibly back to the National Assembly if the Senate modifies the law (still no pb)

And then... As I already predicted, opponents will make recourses to the Constitutional Council which examines if the law is in conformity with our constitution. Here, anything can happen...

Most of the time, the C.C. has only asked for changes in this or that law, I don't think they ever struck a law down. But they can demand major changes, and delay the final installment for at least several months.

Wait and see...

More world power should go to such countries who understand the true principles of governance, humanity and focus on growing LOVE than War, Greed and 'Power'. God Bless Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Spain, Argentina, Canada, South Africa, Britain and France!!!

Why ask God's blessing on a non-religious country, Shonda ? HE had nothing to do with all this — but the majority of our MP's certainly did. And, as Drelin said above, this is still a bill, not yet an act of parliament.

And giving gay people the same rights as anyone else does not prevent my country from being in the top 10 (or top 5 ?) list of weapon sellers in the world, I'm sorry to say.
