You, Me and Dupree

Director: Anthony Russ, Joe Russo

Starring: Owen Wilson , Kate Hudson, Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas

Release: 2006-10-03

You, Me and Dupree is dull, dull, dull. One waits patiently for the gags to kick in, the punchlines to arrive, the laughs to come. But they never quite do. What a waste because its three lead actors Kate Hudson, Matt Dillon and especially Owen Wilson all have proven comic abilities (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, There's Something about Mary and, oh, anything from Shanghai Noon to Wedding Crashers respectively).

Matt and Kate play newlyweds who have just returned from their honeymoon to find that Matt's best man, Owen, has just been fired from his job. The reason: He took a week off work to attend the wedding. Feeling guilty and sympathetic, Matt invites Own to stay with him and his Mrs until Owen gets back on his feet again. Of course, Owen turns out to be houseguest from hell, masturbating on their couch, using their wedding gifts as inappropriate sex toys and jamming the toilets.

All these are fine for a comedy, except that the script by Mike LeSieur is so free of wit, punchlines and originality that one wonders why directors Anthony and John Russo took on the project at all. Surely one of the brothers could have sensed the script was going nowhere.
