Robin Williams has had his fair share of duds but in recent memory none has come close to the embarrassment that is License to Wed. If it did not include known actors like Williams and Mandy Moore, this probably would have gone straight to video store, and deservingly so. License to Wed rushes through the romance aspect, and in ten minutes the young couple Sadie and Ben (Moore and John Krasinski) are planning their wedding day.
However, in order to hold their wedding in a church where Sadie's grandfather designed a stained glass door, the couple has to go through and pass a "wedding class" that's presided over by Reverend Frank (Williams) and his protege (Josh Flitter). The couple is made to attend weird lessons and odder "practical sessions", and Rev Frank even bugs their bedroom to listen in on their pillow talk.
It may sound like an interesting premise but the execution falls flat. Most of the humour do not work, and even a seasoned hand like Williams can't find much to work with. The comic timing is off for almost the entire duration of the movie, and it just seems like Ken Kwapis simply does not know what's funny and what's not. Thankfully, the movie runs a short 90 minutes, with a smattering of laughs to not make this a total waste of time. It comes close, though, and is still not recommended for anyone, even those who love low-brow humour.
