Vantage Point

Director: Pete Travis

Starring: Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt

Release: 2008-03-18

Vantage Point is the worst movie of the week. Yet there's a smart-alecky feel to the whole affair — as if the filmmakers believe they were making something really clever.

This action movie stars William Hurt as the president of the United States who is shot while delivering a speech in Spain. Who shot him? From where? With what? The event itself lasts for only 5 minutes. But it is replayed over and over and over again in the film, each time showing the assassination from the different points of view of various characters, such as the tourist (Forest Whitaker), the Secret Service man (Dennis Quaid) and the TV director (Sigourney Weaver).

As an audience, you are forced to watch the scene repeatedly — albeit from different angles — because each repetition promises to reveal some small new information. But it results in a plot that moves so slowly in its first half, that the film ultimately earns our fatigue and indifference.

Yes, there is enough action, car chases and explosions here to hold the attention of action buffs. But really, if you want a clever action movie, you're better off watching Crows Zero.
