Show your true colours

Colours are the second biggest element to determine the looks of a car after its design. Fridae Auto Club investigates the shades that would suit your ride best.

Silver has the most popular choice in the world for the last seven years. It remains a safe choice among car punters presumably for easy acceptance and stronger residual values when its time to sell. A study in New Zealand shows that a silver car is 50 percent less likely to be involves in an accident than a white car.

Truth: Picking silver as your car's colour suggests that you have no creativity or worse, taste. This is the most boring shade of colour. The entire fleet of Singapore's Premier taxis in silver has oddly been refreshing but it reinforces that one should pick sliver only if it's you wish to moonlight as a cab driver in hope to pick up some hot guys on a Saturday night!

Yes: AUDI TT Roadster (Top left, cars shown in a clockwise direction)
No: Toyota Camry

Black exudes class and sexiness. It is predicted to become the colour of choice among UK new car buyers in 2008 displacing sliver. Picking black in hot weather countries in the South East Asia are not wise choices as they are excellent heat conductors. Black colour can create an impression on gravitas and signals safety and solidity.

Truth: Black is sexy on large sized cars. Small vehicles in black look challenged because the car looks squashed and compromised in dimensions. Avoid solid black as they are notoriously hard to maintain. Metallic black will be incredibly sexy and mysterious; good for cruising at night!

Yes: Mercedes Benz C230
No: Kia Picanto

White is the new black; they are back in vogue since they were last popular with Mercedes saloons in the late 80's. Carmakers are cashing in on this latest fad with various shades of white. Volkswagen's latest Golf GTi is credited with reviving white as the colour among fashion driven car punters.

Truth: White is an unassuming colour. Although it appears to be pure and simple, it's really a colour of incredible depth and is the origin of all shades. Choose a solid white car and you will be condemned to a car that will look ill after a year. Only metallic white or champagne white will do as they are the most sought after for those in the know how. Ignore comments that your white car looks like a hired car or a taxi as these people are clearly not in the loop.

Yes: Volkswagen Golf GTI
No: Mini

Red is sexy and gets one's attention in an instant. However, red can fade and age badly because of oxidisation. Only red can create such a strong impression of masculine, strength and determination.

Truth: For one to drive a red car, that car had better be a cutsey little town car or a smoking Alfa Romeo or Ferrari. Anything else in between would risk being trapped in bad taste vile. BMW coupes in red are so 1980s and should not be touched with a ten-foot pole! Safe bet is to stick to Italian makes or some Hondas if red is a must.

Yes: Alfa Romeo Spider
No: BMW M3

Green is green peace campers choice of colour. Green does help its drivers feel like a part of the natural world it is in.

Truth: Unless you're hoping to sneak into any military base with your car to fulfill any sexual fantasies, Fridae Auto Club begs you not to!

Yes: Mazda2
No: Toyota Prius

Loud colours like orange and yellow are gaining popularity in recent times. Loud paint jobs are usually reserved for cars that are sports or performance orientated. For example, the Ford Focus ST carries the loud orange cue that screams its status as the top dog among its humble siblings. These colours are usually reserved for the flamboyant or brave ones.

Truth: Loud colours are indeed wise choices if they are offered only as in top-spec or special edition cars. Incidentally, these colours can be used to improve the looks of cars that should be in the dumps a decade ago. An old and tired looking second hand car would not look out of place with a generous application of screaming yellow. This can help to divert attention on an ailing car.

Yes: Range Rover Sports in orange
No: Hyundai Getz in yellow

No Alfa or Ferrari here, but my fire engine red Mustang Convertible is sexy and very hot! Not only does the top go down, the driver does too.
