Who would have thought that this simple, unassuming, badly-advertised comedy would turn out to be one of the smartest, most charming films showing in cinemas right now? Produced by the people behind Love Actually and Bridget Jones' Diary: The Edge of Reason, it is a surprisingly realistic and intelligent take on the sweet follies of love.
Ryan Reynolds plays a man who like many of us is looking for love. He ends up getting to know three women, but none of them seem interested in marrying him. His marriage proposals, each with its own lovely diamond ring, never yield a "yes".
The three women and the reasons why lesbian readers should catch this are absolutely beautiful. There's Elizabeth Banks as a strong, beautiful blonde with a true sense of honour. And there's Rachel Weitz as smart, beautiful and ambitious journalist. And finally there's Isla Fisher as a beautiful free-spirited hippie who just wants to have fun. And oh, did we say they were all beautiful?
Ignore the dumb trailer and tagline ("Three relationships. Three disasters.") that give the impression that the movie is some silly Ben Stiller-type caper. Definitely, Maybe is a far more nuanced and sophisticated comedy which may not give you big laughs, but will remind you of the fact that finding love isn't easy and making it work is even harder.
A must-watch for smart LGBTs.
