Has there ever been a "mainstream" show as campy and gay as Ugly Betty? Since 2006, the series has invaded millions of conservative homes and introduced flamboyantly gay characters like Mark and Justin and even a proud transsexual to folks who otherwise wouldn't know better. And for that, we couldn't thank it enough.
True, true, Ugly Betty does reinforce certain stereotypes about LGBTs, but it also humanizes them in a way than only a long-running TV show can. Remember the episode when Mark finally comes out to his Mum? Or the episode when Justin's father stands up for his son after a commuter calls the boy a fairy? Stuff like this wouldn't be seen on our TV screens if not for Ugly Betty. Imagine the impact this has on the young generations of LGBTs.
In Season 3, Betty still hasn't resolved the dilemma over whom to pick the sweet accountant Henry or the sexy sandwich-maker Gio. So, in classic Betty style, she avoids making the decision altogether by going on a vacation alone.
