Defiance

Director: Edward Zwick

Starring: Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell, Live Schreiber,

Release: 2009-02-04

Gosh, there are a lot of movies about the Holocaust/Nazism these days - The Reader, Defiance and the upcoming The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Valkyrie. If you're looking for something closer to an action/war film, then Defiance is the Holocaust movie for you.

After all, it stars James Bond's Daniel Craig himself as one of three Jewish brothers who hide in the Belorussian woods to escape Nazi persecution. There, he and his two brothers (Liev Scrieber and Jamie Bell) find other refugee Jews and forge a tight community, fighting off Nazi soldiers sent to kill them.

Based on a true story, Defiance is directed by Edward Zwick with the same precision and serious-mindedness he applied to his other films like Blood Diamonds, Glory and Courage Under Fire. The results are generally satisfying, though one can't escape the nagging feeling that one's had enough of these Schindler's List-ish movies.

Still, it should be noted that Liev Screiber is just as good at gunning down Nazi soldiers, Rambo-style, as he is at spouting Shakespeare. Some guys have all the talent.
