Nissan's concept Icons

Auto Design: Nissan goes mad with the 2009 Qazana concept car. Also, we take a look at past concept cars from the Japanese carmaker.

Nissan Qazana
2009 Geneva Motor Show
(Main picture)

A masculine, agile, lean all-wheel drive crossover designed for the tough city streets. The Qazana is a 2-door coupe with additional rear hinged half-doors to enhance access. The interior is inspired by the fuel tank and seat of a sports motocycle.

Nissan Europe's London-based design team responsible for this crossover concept credits 1970's beach buggies as their main inspiration. This is Nissan's hint of a Nissan March sized SUV to be launched in 2010. Nissan has made bold claims stating that the production model will be close to the Qazana concept with the exceptions of slightly larger glasshouse, conventional rear doors and a proper rear seat for three passengers. Be prepared to be shocked.

Nissan Pivo 2
(2007 Tokyo Motor Show)
(Picture 1)

Nissan treaded new ground back in 2005 with their first Pivo Concept, a small Lithium-ion battery powered personal transport vehicle. The most outstanding feature was its unique rotating cabin, which made the use of a reverse gear absolutely obsolete.

The Nissan Pivo 2 Concept builds on the original Pivo and adds wheels that can turn 90 degrees, allowing the Pivo to drive sideways for easy parking. The rotating cabin remains but Nissan has provided the single-seater with some company, a Robotic Agent. The Robotic Agent is designed to make journeys less stressful and conversations on just about anything car related can be held in English and Japanese. Perfect for the lonely?

Nissan Trailrunner
(1997 Tokyo Motor Show)
(Picture 2)

A curious mix of coupe lines and SUV-like ride height was simply cutting edge back in 1997. The trailrunner runs on 18" wheels and had M-shaped lines to create this stunning concept. Bright yellow-coloured interior was our only gripe.

Nissan Nails
(2001 Tokyo Motor Show)
(Picture 3)

Designed and engineered with 'booster' as its theme, the Nails concept suggests new, flexible ways of using vehicles as a tool for communicating with friends, rather than simply as a means of transportation. The Nails concept integrates advanced communications tools including cellular phones. This concept can be used either as an exciting two-seater or as a light pickup in whatever creative way one might desire.

What's so wild about it. I don't think its any wilder than other concept cars I've seen
