While today's pop charts continue to be ruled by established artists like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and Katy Perry, a whole new generation of female pop artists is getting ready for their turn to grab the baton and run with it.
Take for example promising upstarts like Neon Hitch, Sky Ferreira, Collette Car, Zowie and Jessie J who I introduced to you last week. All of them bring a unique style of their own - not modeling themselves after the current ladies in charge.
Another emerging female artist I'm tipping to do big things in pop music next year is Los Angeles-based artist Kay. She is slowly but steadily gearing up to take over the world with her invigorating blend of pop that bursts with confidence and is dominated by her sassy, tease-'till-you-please attitude. She has been out and about across Hollywood, writing and recording material together with some of the hottest new producers for her debut LP to be released on Interscope Records in the near future.
Most of Kay's work is tightly kept under wraps, but listen to the new "Major" that recently surfaced to get a taste for Kay. In fact, this song neatly defines Kay's edgy brand of pop with a sound and message that explains what she's all about.
Produced by the soundboard-savvy and talented Dr Rosen Rosen, the song features fresh hip pop stylings with an instantly infectious, punctuating dance groove and Kay's straight up lyrics, "We can play a game, but i'm in control. Have you not heard? I'm m-a-j-o-r."
Word, Kay. Tell it like it is.
Interscope has an exciting portfolio of new artists that are still developing their sound and presentation. Judging from "Major," Kay is pretty close to the big time so hopefully we don't have to wait too long before more of her music will be unleashed upon us. The world is ready for something fresh and new, and Kay is one of the people that can deliver.
