For the past few years, Aman Resorts has been remarkably bullish in Europe and America, so it's something of a homecoming for the Singapore-based luxury group to be opening a new property in South East Asia. Set on the edge of an isolated white-sand beach overlooking Vinh Hy Bay, about a one hour flight north-east of Ho Chi Minh City, Amano'i – a portmanteau of Sanskrit and Vietnamese for 'peaceful place' – more than lives up to its moniker.
Like a tectonic jigsaw, Malaysian architects Denniston quietly inserted 36 dark grey tiled pavilions and villas into the rocky promontory and thick evergreen vegetation allowing the sweeping Vietnamese low-eaved roofs to slide into each other and into the granite formation. There may be plenty of outdoorsy activity to indulge in – not least mountain hiking and snorkeling – but we think the mountainous terrain of a national park and a lotus-filled lake make for a perfectly idyllic backdrop to the spa and a floating yoga pavilion. – Daven Wu
