Watch: Documentary explores LGBT Pakistan

Poshida, the first-of-it's-kind independent documentary, follows hidden LGBT individuals and communities in Pakistan

Interviewing a broad range of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pakistanis across the country, Poshida explores the history and modern culture of LGBT Pakistan to provide a deep insight into this hidden world.

The film examines sexuality and gender identities in south Asia and discusses the legacy of colonialism, class structures and the impact of the US government's gay rights advocacy in Pakistan.

The film also discusses the devastating role of Pakistan's fledgling TV industry in the case of the Lahori serial killer of 2014 and human rights abuses of transgender men and women for entertainment

One of the co-directors of the film shared some of the documentary's impacts with takepart.com:

"Pakistan is an interesting place to make an LGBT film because in some ways, it's easy to be who you are, and in other ways it's absolutely impossible to be yourself," the film maker said. "It's such a complex landscape, which is influenced by class, gender, nationality, and social norms."

The co-director, who wished to remain anonymous, also said "In a way, the LGBT story in Pakistan tells you so much about how the country works, what the country's values are, what its history is."
