sex and the city

Are you living in Asian country that broadcasts Queer as Folk? Fire Sia would like to know as she shares her thoughts on censorship on the tube and on the Internet.

Yes, my friends love this show - uncut. In some parts of Asia, I am very much aware that it is edited and shortened by the board of censors. Now, now, I know that some are aware and not at all wondering why they do this, but for those who are, I think you deserve an explanation. First of all, I just noticed it (correct me if I'm wrong) while watching the same show in Vancouver. I noticed that it was more graphic around here than back at home. Like I said uncut.

Could it be that the board of censors are trying to protect us from liberalist views on sex and sexuality?

If you ask me, there really isn't much to protect, everyone knows what's going on and how the story of creation goes. I am just under the impression that we are being made to believe in the old tale of the birds, the bees, the honey and the trees not to mention the flowers.

Queer as Folk

Now we should have this show!! Please do send me an email if your Asian country has this show on air. It's so cool!

I have NEVER seen a show where gay men's intimate scenes were actually shown on quite a regular basis and issues such as co-parenting between lesbians and gay men were discussed and exercised. I mean, it's just amazing, as if I was watching my ideal world on TV! I mean, they don't all portray peaceful and loving co-existence, but along with portrayal of sexual activity (which is impressively done - not pornographic!!), sexuality and defending ones rights is also well portrayed. Ah, now that is freedom of expression.

The Ellen Show

Now she's totally OUT in this show and frankly she's very funny. I don't know if I'll get to watch this on a regular basis but Ellen DeGeneres sure has talent. The premiere of this show came out just last week and so far has received good ratings.

I have a lot to expect and hear from Ellen's new show and I'm sure she's doing one hell of a great job. Cheers Ellen!

No Public Access

This is NOT a show. This is what I experienced here in Vancouver's public Internet access booths. Yes, I do check my email and look at Fridae.com but for some reason, I couldn't get into the site. I always get a notice that says: "This site and its contents are not deemed suitable for public access." Yeah, great. It made me remember the time when I purchased a really cheap pre-paid internet card sold by a church organization and it wouldn't let me access any gay/lesbian website - even my own URL for that matter.

How frustrating it is that some organizations think LGBT websites are "unfit" for viewing. It's difficult to educate the world but how will prejudice stop with all this unnecessary censorship? They're not giving us much of a chance here.

Back in Asia, I was never bitten by the boob tube - for lack of good shows and uncut film art (as I would call it). I wonder how these censorship boards censor certain programs? I sure would want to dig into their brains and see their definitions of public perversions. Maybe I'd find a clue and I would understand why shows depicting incestuous crimes, terrorism, murders and sexual abuse pass the censorship boards without too many problems. But for now, I'm back on the net and away from that useless black box at home.
