Police: Penang becoming a gay sex services hub

The police in Penang have accused local authorities of inaction resulting in the state becoming a gay sex services hub.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakub has told Malaysia’s The Star newspaper that the state is becoming a hub for commercial gay sex services and the local councils seem to be encouraging it by not revoking the permits of establishments that had been raided by the police in recent years.

A 2008 report in The Star newspaper showing men at Midlands Park being rounded up to be taken to the state contingent police headquarters for questioning. Over that weekend, police raided four massage parlours and gay saunas

“Although we have forwarded our recommendations to the local councils not to renew the operators’ permits, we find the centres still in operation,” he was quoted as saying in The Star on Monday.

Because of the local authorities’ inaction, the operators have become big-headed, acting as if they are above the law.

“In fact, all the premises that we have raided are still carrying on with their businesses,” he said, adding that police had identified at least five health clubs catering to gay activities in Fettes Park, Pulau Tikus, Bagan Jermal and Seberang Jaya. He claimed that the health clubs are used as a front for commercial gay sex services.

On Tuesday, the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) responded saying it issues licences to fitness centres based on health care services policies and would cancel or not renew licences if police reports have been lodged against those centres for conducting “unhealthy activities.”

Meanwhile, openly gay social commentator Hafidz Baharom who blogged on The Star’s website questioned why was the police only focusing on gay venues.

“While it's true that there are centers in all states that are being used for sex, how is it that only those servicing homosexual clients are labeled as allowing 'unhealthy culture'?

“Gay sex, by far, is the least of the police of Penang's major concern when it comes to it's objective of maintaining civil order.”

Last month, Penang police raided two gay joints, a massage parlour and a fitness centre, and arrested 19 men including a 65-year-old grandfather.

they are not seling drugs. They are being raided as gay harassment only, this is just police pressure and anti gay bias. They are FAR MORE straight establishments that cater to comercial sex...are they raided on same frequency?? No. Just the gay ones.

Police bias is reflected here, as homophobia once again raises its ugly head. I am in Penang right now. It is a beautiful island, and popular with tourists and second home retirees. The authorities would be unwise to fail to woo the pink dollar to this world heritage site. Good to know that the businesses are still in operation in spite of frequent raids. Show them that the queers are tough too (as in Stonewall and the Black Cat cafe in Quentin Crisp's time).

I'd been to one of the health club, not seeing anyone fucking in the shower room but people openly selling drugs to each other.

This is blatant hypocracies as we all know it, there are far too many gay joints thriving in KL and yet hardly were they being raided for obvious reasons...anyway they don't pose any menace to the society, just a hangout place for the likes irrespective of their sexual orientation...just hope the minorities are being treated fairly and save us the harrassment going on with our lives here.

Honestly this is also politically based as the ruling BN cannot do much in Penang so these are a few of their taktics to shake the ground a little for the opposition party ruling Penang :)

There are more important things in Malaysia that needs the Govt's attention, widespread corruption, racial divide, poor welfare for the less privileged, shaky foreign investor confidence, high inflation rate, rising crime rate, yet the country is obssesed about whose cock is up whose arse, young girls' not wearing panties on Valentine's Day, terrorising the gay community, fighting over use of vocabulary, condeming bakuteh, claiming rights to chicken rice and chilli crabs.... you would think a government would have more sense than a three year old child. Terima kasih Allah I no longer pay tax to that country!

all the gays and lesbians should vote Pakatan for a change of 377 penal code. It is time that the homo in Malaysia should see that change is plausible as the Pakatan has control 4 states.

LGE is not taking action but the police of BN is.
