China bans depictions of gay people on television

The Chinese government has banned “vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content” from television, including homosexuality, adultery, cleavages and reincarnation.

China’s infamous State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has released new regulations for content that “exaggerates the dark side of society.”

As part of the new rules same-sex relationships, extra-marital affairs, one night stands and underage relationships are all deemed too sensitive for Chinese audiences. The ban extends to smoking, revealing clothing and reincarnation.

The news comes after last week popular online gay drama, Addicted, was pulled from streaming sites.

The government said the show contravened the new guidelines, which state that “No television drama shall show abnormal sexual relationships and behaviours, such as incest, same-sex relationships, sexual perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual violence, and so on.”

The clampdown is the latest in an increase in cultural censorship that President Xi Jinping has implemented since taking office in November 2012.

The move has angered gay rights activists who have been battling stigma against the LGBT community since its legalisation in 1997 and declassification as a mental illness in 2001.

How primitive could they possibly get ? Instead of focussing upon Nth
Korea and its so called nuclear tests , the west should focus more upon the breaching of human rights in China. Time has come to show'em that they ain't that fantastic after all , and that human rights are way more valuable/ precious than trade / money.
Sadly enough , I don't think that the Middle East is at present the only place on earth where people should be escaping from.

This President Xi is trying to turn back the clock in many different ways, exerting ever more control over media etc, to reflect his personal views. A new dictator who is intent on re-making China based on traditional communist values with no input from it's citizens. Another reason Taiwan will not merge with the mainland.

If you want to live in the past, fine, but not at the expense of an ever better informed public that has it's basic human rights violated. Too many countries today think by creating parrots of their ancient societal views and retricting their speech, right of assembly and outdated ideas, that they will bring a country together. In fact, just the opposite may tend to happen as people get increaaasinly frustrated and finally disillusioned with oppression.
Live in a box and you die in a box !

All the banned tv content can still be obtained by other legal means.

Having national tv as something "pure" isn't so bad.

That's more to life than homosexuality.

#7 comment: SURE, there is more to life, there is LOTS more. However, life IS and SHOULD BE about FREEDOM OF CHOICES of life in general, right? Very frustrating to hear China, North Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, etc all, ALL have to tell people how to live their lives, to control people's lives and decisions. When does it stop?? PEOPLE, STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS!

How very disappointing after China appeared to be moving in the direction of actually legalising gay unions having recognised it as not a mental illness and judges allowing appeals against persecution by certain local authorities. But I am still hopeful this is not going to be a more general slide back into repression and persecution, but who can tell?

That's my point. Don't get het up about lgbt rights. Freedom is equality for all.

However, there are aspects that are best avoided, for their own danger, and also to avoid the narrow minded views of others.

Live a good life.
