Mortuary

Director: Tobe Hooper

Starring: Dan Byrd, Stephanie Patton, Alexandra Adi, Denise Crosby, Courtney Peldon

Screening: 2006-07-18

Tobe Hooper is the man responsible for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was a horror classic in its time, but Mortuary is just not on the same level. Although the acting is decent enough for a B-grade movie and the makeup effects are pretty good, the cinematography and the "special effects" are simply awful, much less to say the plot.

Why would anyone want to start life anew by running a derelict funeral home? Your guess is as good as mine, but that is exactly what the Doyle family has set out to do (I guess that's what you get if your parent is trained in embalming). Of course, the mortuary seems to have a bad history, and someone isn't pleased that the territory is being invaded. Soon, the recently dead become the living dead, and the recently alive becomes the freshly dead...

As expected, there is plenty of gore, but the plot is simply too weak even for a B-grade horror film to be excused. There are also some really odd casting choices — Alexandre Adi is 30 when the movie was shot, but she plays the role of a teenager. Yes, we know botox does wonders, but it does not work miracles. So there really isn't much to recommend for Mortuary. It's a movie for the most hardcore gore fiends, and everyone else can consider giving it a miss.
