If you're looking for a smart movie, you can immediately give Dragon Tiger Gate a miss. This is not a film that will give your brain a workout. But if you're looking for hunky men in tank tops, without taking a trip down to the clubs, then this becomes a must-watch.
Let's face it — there are times when all you want is to watch a movie that pleases on an aesthetic, superficial level, and this is one such movie. There is a flimsy plot, some truly awkward acting, and names so preposterous (Tiger, Dragon and Turbo? Puh-leese.) that it boggles the mind. Yet, it is a movie about men battling it out dressed in outfits that fully show off their developed bodies, and as such is quite a guilty pleasure indeed. That it features some very impressive action choreography is an added bonus.
The less said of the convoluted plot the better — it is basically a movie about a bunch of good guys teaming up against the bad, and all you need to know is that the good guys are Dragon (Donnie Yen), Tiger (Nicholas Tse), and Turbo (Shawn Yue), and the foe they are against is called Shibumi. And they will fight to within an edge of their lives in order to defeat the enemy.
Based on the very popular Hong Kong comic series of the same name, it is little wonder why much of the film feels a little cartoonish (especially the odd retro hairstyles that many of the characters are sporting), but it is also because of the film's heritage that the exaggerated kungfu moves and hammy acting feel quite at home.
This is a movie best suited for kungfu fans and for moviegoers who like their men in body hugging tank tops and very butch. Who really needs a plot or credible acting in this case?
