Slither

Director: James Gunn

Starring: Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, Gregg Henry, Michael Rooker, Rheagan Wallace, Tania Saulnier

Screening: 2006-06-06

Horror fans will simply love this hilarious parody of the low-budget
horror films (think Night of the Living Dead, Invasion
of the Body Snatchers
and The Blob). Director James
Gunn seems to know everything there is to know about the horror
genre. His film is chockful of nudge-nudge wink-wink references
to horror cliches and conventions.

Set in a small town, Nathan Fillion plays a crass businessman married
to the town beauty queen (Elizabeth Banks). When his cocky wife
rejects his sexual advances for the umpteenth time, Nathan wanders
off to a sleazy bar where he picks up the local tart Brenda. As
the two take a walk in the woods, they are attacked by a creature
that came out of a landed meteorite. Soon, Nathan turns into a slimy
squid-like thing while Brenda becomes pregant with slugs that can
turn people into zombies.

Without a doubt, Slither is the most fun film you could
have in the cinema right now. The film is deliberately cheesy, but
not annoyingly so.

The actors ham it up but never go over the top, while the special
effects is just cool enough to remind you of what horror films used
to look like before the advent of green screens and computer-generated
imagery. This movie is absolutely perfect to watch with Coke, popcorn
and a big bunch of noisy friends. You'll have fun, we promise.
